Search Engine Optimization
Search engines are the most common way people find content on the web. Search Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing content on websites and pages so that they will be found more easily.
What can we do to improve our SEO?
Titles
This is your main heading in Cascade, and the goal should be to write keyword-rich and meaningful webpage titles. Google will use these titles to find out what your page is about. However, don't make the title too long –Google will penalize pages with exceedingly long titles. The recommendation is no more than 50–60 characters.
Body content
Repeat your keywords in subheadlines, be careful to avoid spelling errors, and put relevant links in your content. All of these will improve your site and page SEO.
When linking text, do not write "Click Here." Search engines will look at your linked text to determine what the linked pages are about, and "Click Here" isn't meaningful. For example, instead of writing "Click here to find out more about the history of The University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV," use the more optimized "Find out more about the history of The University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV."
Don't forget to add relevant links from other pages. If it makes sense to link your page from another page, add the link, but don't overdo it. Google will rank a page based on how many legitimate links it has.
Meta description
Add a meta description to your webpage.
The meta description is what shows up on the search results page, effectively acting as the description of the page. This description is pulled from the content of the page, and while it is often appropriate to pull this content directly from the page, it can sometimes be best to provide additional detail.
To add your own meta description in Cascade, edit the desired page and select the "Metadata" tab in the editor. You can include your description in the "Description" field. Include keywords, make it readable and interesting, and keep all descriptions under 160 characters.
Naming files
Name your files (PDFs, images, etc.) with short and descriptive names that contain relevant keywords. For example, instead of uploading an image of Wesley Hall titled "dsc-789423.jpg," using the more-relevant "wesley-hall.jpg" will increase page SEO. If possible, use at least two but no more than three or four keywords in your filename.
File sizes
Be sure your image has been saved for web. Larger images slow down the load time of the page and slow-loading pages will be penalized by search engines. If you are unsure of how to reduce file sizes, please contact websuggest@uwinnipeg.ca.
Delete or unpublish old content
Sometimes, when uploading a new document, the old file may still be found in a search. It's important to unpublish or delete old or outdated content that is no longer needed or relevant. This will assist users in finding the right content.
Mobile friendly
More than 50 percent of our website visitors are using mobile devices. Webpages are ranked on how they perform on a mobile device. Thus, you should:
- Be sure to reduce file sizes
- When using tables, be sure they render properly on mobile devices and use percentage widths
- Check your pages on a mobile device to ensure it appears as expected
