Distill your research to its most salient, impactful points,
design a slide that captures the essence of your work,
deliver a three-minute presentation to a room of non-experts,
and you could win up to $2,000 in the 2025 University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Three-Minute Thesis Competition!

The Three-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by . The University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's local competition celebrates the work done by its graduate students while cultivating their research communication and knowledge translation skills.

As chosen by the judges, the first-place winner receives $2,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Victoria, BC to attend the Western Regional Three-Minute Thesis Competition! The runner-up receives $1,000.

The audience selects the recipient of the $500 People's Choice Award.

Eligibility, Registration Instructions, and Event Timeline

All University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV graduate students are eligible for this competition, regardless of whether they are in a course-, thesis-, or practicum-based program.

University of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV students are encouraged to present content from their term papers, thesis proposals, practicum reports, and master's theses, at the competition.

 by completing the webform before 11:59 pm on January 31, 2025! The registration form asks for a presentation title, 150-word abstract, and (optional) 150-word bio to be used on our website and in promotional materials. 

3MT Timeline and Deadlines for Registrants

are due January 31, 2025. Following this, contestants receive two exclusive training sessions: one on oral presentation and knowledge translation skills, and another on the basics of graphic design. They also have the option to have professional photos taken, and to participate in a practice session prior to the competition.

Judges and Judging Criteria

3MT Judging Criteria

The competition judges are asked to evaluate each presentation along each of the following dimensions:

Communication

  • Did the presenter use non-verbal communication (i.e. eye contact, voice modulation, body language) effectively?
  • Did the presenter use language and terminology that was clear, jargon-free, and understandable to a general audience?
  • Did the presentation follow a logical sequence?
  • Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation? Did they elaborate for too long on one aspect, or did the presentation feel rushed?

Comprehension

  • Did the talk help you to understand the scholarly research being undertaken?
  • Did the presenter clearly outline the nature and purpose of their research?
  • Did the presenter clearly indicate the fascinating or compelling aspects of their research?
  • Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes?

Engagement

  • Was the talk engaging?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain the audience's attention?
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their work?
  • Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research?
  • Did the talk inspire you to want to know more?
  • Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation - was it clear, legible, and concise?
Presentation Rules and Regulations

Presentation Rules:

  • A single static 16:9 PowerPoint slide is required, no additional slides are permitted
  • The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration
  • No additional media is permitted
  • No additional props are permitted, including costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment,etc.
  • Presentations are limited to three minutes; competitors exceeding the limit are disqualified
  • Presentations are to be delivered in regular prose (e.g. no poems, slam poetry, raps, songs, etc.)
  • Presentations must commence from and remain on the stage
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter initiates either movement or speech
  • The decision of the judging panel is final
