Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Doctoral Scholarships (CGS) and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships

The Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program—Doctoral Scholarships (CGS-D) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement. Candidates eligible for both a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship and a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship will automatically be considered for both awards. For more information, .

Value

Joseph-Armand Bombardier—CGS Doctoral Scholarships are valued at $35,000 per year for 36 months, up to a total of $105,000.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are valued at $20,000 per year for 12, 24, 36, or 48 months, up to a total of $80,000.

SSHRC determines the value and duration of an award based on the number of months of full-time study (or equivalent) the applicant will have completed by December 31 of the year of application.

Eligibility

To qualify to apply to Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS—D and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship you must:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada at the time the application is submitted to SSHRC or a Canadian postsecondary institution with a quota
  • Be pursuing doctoral studies in the social sciences or humanities
  • Not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from the (CIHR), the (NSERC) or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree
  • Not be applying in the 2018-19 academic year to NSERC or CIHR for a fellowship or scholarship.
  • At the time of application, you need not be assured of admission to a degree program.

Eligibility of Degree Programs
Doctoral awards are tenable only in degree programs that include significant original, autonomous research that leads to the completion of a dissertation, major scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that, as a requirement for completion of the program, is merit-reviewed at the institutional level.

Application Procedures

How to Apply

Applicants who have been registered at a post-secondary institution within the calendar year are required to submit their applications through the University at which they were registered.

Applicants who were not registered at a post-secondary institution in the calendar year are required to make a direct application to the agency via the . The deadline for direct applications is set by the funding agency and their website should be consulted.

Applicants must complete the application form in accordance with accompanying instructions.

Candidates eligible for both a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship and one SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship will automatically be considered for both awards.

Most Canadian degree-granting postsecondary institutions receive a quota indicating the number of students they can nominate for the national competition.
