CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents perform highly skilled technical and specialized support services in one or more disciplines and act as a senior resource person in a technical area.  Work involves curatorial, instructing, academic support, research and administrative responsibilities.

General direction is provided by a more senior administrator or academic staff member, however, a high degree of initiative, judgement and resourcefulness is required.  Incumbents provide direction and guidance to technicians at lower levels and may be required to assume their responsibilities and those of a senior administrator during normal absences.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Protects the integrity of all collections (e.g. Archaeology collection) in a department against all foreseeable risks, ensuring de-accession is according to written approval and environmental controls are exercised appropriately
  2. Designs, develops and creates both stationary and travelling exhibits, as well as facilities and websites, oversees materials on loan, and develops and implements long and short range plans, policies and procedures for collections and facilities in consultation with Committees and Administrators
  3. Provides knowledgeable information and advice as a senior resource on artifacts and departmental collections to researchers, granting agencies and the public
  4. Supervises multi-purpose laboratories for teaching and research purposes
  5. Supports research projects (taking a lead role as required) and may write and/or prepare articles for publication
  6. Curates a museum, making recommendations and implementing policy
  7. Instructs and/or team teaches in a credit course(s)
  8. Orders, collects, identifies, stores, processes, catalogues, preserves, documents, statistically analyses, interprets, and maintains teaching, research, laboratory and museum collections
  9. Maintains and/or produces records, data bases, catalogues, annual activities and other reports, both electronically and in other formats as required
  10. Conducts lab tours, classes, labs, training seminars, for administrative and academic staff and students, providing supervision to staff and students including: hiring, training, orientation, technical direction and guidance to other technicians
  11. Identifies sources of income and applies for it, monitors budgets as required and initiating ordering to maintain adequate stocks of materials, equipment, artifacts, vehicles, supplies, and collections
  12. Is responsible for keeping abreast of new technology and developments in a field as required by a position
  13. Performs responsibilities of a senior administrator during absences or as assigned
  14. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education and Experience

  • Graduate Degree in a related discipline plus three years of directly related experience or Undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus five years of directly related experience or Diploma plus six years of directly related experience
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the theory and techniques in a variety of areas within a specialized field or discipline
  • Certificate, training and/or experience in a specialized area(s) which may include: field, laboratory, collections, First Nations, sub-fields of expertise, etc.
  • Experience in independent teaching of credit courses (e.g. Field School) and development of research, museum, and teaching resources is required in some positions
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in computer applications required by the department
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public with highly developed oral and written communication skills and the ability to write academic quality papers, suitable for publishing
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, initiative and resourcefulness
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other University staff
  • Ability to plan, direct and guide the work of other employees and projects
  • Some positions may require a current and valid Manitoba drivers licence
