CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents perform highly skilled technical support services in one or more disciplines and act as a senior resource person in a technical area.  Work involves completion of academic, administrative, research and curatorial responsibilities used for teaching and research purposes.

General direction is provided by a more senior administrator or academic staff member, however, a high degree of initiative, judgement and resourcefulness is required.  Incumbents provide direction and guidance to technicians at lower levels and may be required to assume their responsibilities and those of a senior administrator during normal absences.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Maintains a wide variety of equipment and its inventory records used for teaching and research purposes, arranging for servicing as required
  2. Instructs, demonstrates, advises and assists students in laboratory techniques and the use of specialized equipment
  3. May be responsible for logistics of field trips
  4. May participate in student advising at specific times of the year
  5. Maintains collections, prepares exhibits and administers any related volunteer programs
  6. Creates and implements policies and guidelines for collections
  7. Seeks funding opportunities and completes applications for funding
  8. Is responsible for implementing WHMIS at the departmental level
  9. Provides technical support to academics and administrators by being responsible for the ongoing operation of laboratories in an area, recommending purchase of equipment, maintenance of facilities and equipment, observing safety requirements, and administering the policies and procedures of an area
  10. Actively participates in research projects, acting as a consultant, interpreting research needs and analyzing the significance of results achieved
  11. Administers an operating budget for an area under the direction of a faculty member or administrator
  12. Conducts classes and training seminars for administrative and academic staff
  13. Hires, trains, evaluates performance, and provides technical direction and guidance to other technicians
  14. Is responsible for keeping abreast of new technology and developments in a field as required by a position
  15. Performs responsibilities of a senior administrator during absences or as assigned
  16. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus four years of directly related experience or Diploma plus five years of directly related experience
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in using computer applications required by the department
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills with the ability to deliver instruction in the operation of equipment and methodologies and to prepare policies, procedures, guidelines and reports
  • Proficiency in technical skills to provide technical support to academic programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, initiative and resourcefulness
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other University staff
  • Ability to plan, direct and guide the work of other employees and projects
