CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents perform standardized support functions following well established rules and procedures requiring some library experience.  Incumbents require close supervision during their training period; however, once trained, duties are performed under general supervision.  The supervision of other employees is not a requirement at this level, however, incumbents may be required to assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Responds to routine inquiries by users of the library referring more complex questions to a supervisor
  2. Sorts, shelves, shelf reads and relocates books and/or materials and assists in annual inventory
  3. Assists library users in the use of library tools, services and equipment and performs basic adjustments and/or servicing to equipment
  4. Receives, records, sorts and distributes incoming and prepares outgoing materials
  5. Processes information via data entry/retrieval, updates, printouts and electronic mail and Integrated Library System
  6. Processes and repairs new materials, including labels, barcodes, stamping, binding, security strips, etc.
  7. Assists in the introductory training of new employees
  8. Collects and binds materials, performs minor mending, laminating and repairs to books and materials, and recommends external binding of damaged books and materials
  9. Processes books and materials entering or returning from circulation using an automated circulation system
  10. Processes materials for security detection, de-sensitizes books on loan, deals tactfully with patrons and refers all serious cases to a senior staff member
  11. Accepts payments, credits borrowers' accounts using a data terminal and issues receipts for fines, lost books, microform copies and photocopies and may handle a petty cash float
  12. Operates a camera to take personal photos, issues and updates identification cards for library patrons
  13. Attends meetings and performs special projects or other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education 

  • High school completion
Experience
  • One year of directly related library experience
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to apply automated and manual procedures
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
  • Manual dexterity may be required
