Gender Identity & Roommate Gender
During the application process, Campus Living collects information about gender identity and roommate gender preference. These options are used when matching roommates within double dorms.
Campus Living is committed to working with all students to meet their housing needs in an environment that values diversity and promotes dignity of all people. Please contact us here if you have any questions about the roommate matching process.
Gender Identity
If you would like to disclose your gender identity to Campus Living, you may do so when registering or updating your profile on the Campus Living Portal. (Campus Living only requires this information when matching roommates who select a single-gender option. Please see "Roommate Gender Preference" below for more details.)
- A Cisgender or Cis person is someone whose gender identity is the same as their assigned sex at birth. For example, a cisgender woman is a woman who was assigned female at birth and now identifies as a woman.
- A Transgender or Trans person is someone whose gender identity is different than their assigned sex at birth. For example, a transgender woman is a woman who was assigned male at birth but now identifies as a woman.
- A Non-Binary person is someone whose gender identity is neither male nor female, or a mix of the two. For example, a non-binary person might have been assigned male at birth but now identifies as genderqueer.
- Two Spirit is culturally distinct to some First Nations/Indigenous people. The term may be used to describe a person's gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual identity, and/or societal role.
Roommate Gender Preference
With McFeetors Hall double dorms, there are three roommate gender matching options: single-gender male, single-gender female, and gender-inclusive housing (mixed-gender). Students are matched with a roommate who has picked the same roommate gender option. For example, someone who picks gender-inclusive housing will only be matched with another student who picked gender inclusive housing. This preference is set when registering and can be updated by contacting Campus Living here »
When selecting a single-gender roommate option, it is important to also select a corresponding gender identity. E.g. a student who selects single-gender female as a roommate option should also select Cis Female or Trans Female. In cases where a student selects incompatible options, Campus Living may contact the student to clarify their selections.
Note that these options apply only to double dorms and do not apply to single occupancy rooms (such as Balmoral rooms and McFeetors Hall single dorms) or Family Housing rooms.
